It has been eight-and-a-half years since Jary and Sheryl Kleiboeker received word that their son, 19-year-old Lance Cpl. Nicholas Kleiboeker, of 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, was killed by an exploding munitions bunker near Al Hillah, Iraq on May 13, 2003, becoming the first unit casualty from the Wars on Terror. For other families who joined the Kleiboekers at the battalion’s headquarters on Friday, only a year had passed since the dreaded knock of a casualty assistance officer.
