Marine's speed ‘stood him well in combat'

Hildebrand Bernier, Sr. of Buena Park grew up poor in New York, his youthful speed helping him as a company runner during World War II.

Hildebrand "Bernie" Bernier, Sr., my father, was born on Feb. 12, 1915 in the town of Rio Piedras in Puerto Rico. In 1928, he moved with his family to New York when his father, Erasmo Bernier, was sent as pastor to the Second Street Baptist Church on Manhattan Island.
