Through April 6, the cost to join the race is $76.50, compared to the normal $90 runner’s fee. Starting April 7, registration will open to the masses.

Last year, more than 6,000 troops signed up for the run and made a strong showing. First place was taken by Navy Lt. Cmdr. John Mentzer who finished in 2 hours, 23 minutes, 19 seconds. The first Marine to cross the finish line was Sgt. Ryan Ellis, 22, a member of the Marine Corps’ running team.

The annual 26.2-mile race winds through Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia, past some of the country's most inspiring vistas and national monuments including the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Pentagon, the National Mall and the Potomac River.

This year’s race will be held Oct. 31
